Musician Joe Walsh was born in 1947 in Wichita, KS, but grew up primarily in Montclair, NJ. During high school, Joe Walsh played oboe for his school band and was also the bassist for the popular local rock group Nomads in Montclair. Upon graduation, Joe Walsh enrolled in Kent State University where he played in several local bands. However, after his first semester he dropped out to pursue music full-time. Soon after dropping out, Walsh tried out for the band, James Gang. Impressed with the audition, the band brought Walsh onboard as a guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist. James Gang released three albums during Walsh’s tenure with the group, including the albums James Gang Rides Again and Thirds, both of which were certified Gold by the RIAA.
In 1971, Joe Walsh left James Gang in order to form his own band, which he named Barnstorm. The band, which featured two other members, released their debut self-titled album in 1972. Although the album received great reviews from critics, it was not commercially successful. The following year, Barnstorm released their second album, The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, which peaked at #6 on the US Billboard chart. The group was short-lived and disbanded the next year.
In 1975, Joe Walsh joined the Eagles, where he contributed on guitar, keyboard, and backup vocals. The first Eagles album to feature Walsh was Hotel California, which was released in 1976. The album was the band’s best-selling, with over 16 million copies sold in the United States. The Eagles also took home two Grammy Awards for the tracks “Hotel California” and “New Kid in Town.”
After the Eagles initial breakup in 1980, Joe Walsh continued to record and release albums as a solo artist, although he did not find the same level of success as he had earlier in his career. After a hiatus that lasted almost 15 years, the Eagles reunited in the mid-1990s. When the band reconciled they toured and released a mix of live, compilation, and studio albums, most recently The Studio Albums 1972-1979 in 2013.
Over the course of Joe Walsh’s career, he has released a total of 12 solo albums, most recently All Night Long: Live in Dallas in 2013.
