Meek Mill

Hip-hop is not only a musical genre, but also an entire cultural movement that originated mainly in Jamaica and was brought to urban New York City in the 1970s. Hip-hop found its way into the mainstream in the early 1990s and is now amongst the most popular music genres worldwide. Hip-hop culture can be identified by its fashion trends and other unique aspects, including breakdancing and beatboxing. The culture has inspired a number of artists, including Meek Mill.

One of the most vital elements of hip-hop is rap, a form of achieving rhythm through spoken words that rhyme. Rap originated in West African tradition where wandering poets, called griots, would bring their stories from village to village. Today, there are dozens of famous rap and hip-hop artists. Wycleff Jean, Kanye West, and Jay-Z are among the best-known artists of the 21st century. Other popular rappers include The Roots and Bow Wow. Artist Info

Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill, born Robert Williams, began releasing mixtapes in 2006 with The Real Me. Within a few years, after the release of Flamerz 2, his output prompted offers from Warner Bros. and T.I.'s Atlantic-affiliated Grand Hustle. The MC opted to align with the latter, but he never signed and spent some time in jail. Once free, he continued pushing mixtapes, including a fourth volume of the Flamerz series, and was included in XXL magazine's Freshman Class feature for 2011. Through Twitter, Meek Mill caught the attention of Rick Ross, signed to the MC's Maybach Music Group, and appeared on the label's Self Made, Vol. 1 compilation prior to releasing his first proper studio album, Dreams and Nightmares, in 2012. Its biggest hit was "Amen," featuring Drake, which peaked at number four on the Billboard rap chart. After dozens of his own featured appearances, including one on a remix of Ace Hood's "Bugatti," Mill lit up the gossip pages in 2015 when he began dating Nicki Minaj. That same year, his sophomore effort Dreams Worth More Than Money landed with Minaj, Ross, Drake, and others on the guest list. Led by the single "All Eyes on You," it entered the Billboard 200 at number one -- one spot higher than his debut.
