In 2016, Weezer is scheduled to release their tenth studio album, Weezer. Also known as “The White Album,” the band’s fourth self-titled album includes the singles ”Thank God for Girls,” “Do You Wanna Get High?,” and “King of the World.” Weezer front man River Cuomo described the album as a “beach album,” influenced by his time spent hanging around Venice Beach and Santa Monica in Los Angeles.
In January 2016, Weezer announced they will embark on a tour in support of Weezer. Launching at Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion on June 10, Weezer will be joined by Panic! At The Disco for each show on the 41-date trek. Other stops on the tour include Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta, GA, Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, CA, and BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ, before finishing up on August 6 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Orange County. Weezer was formed in 1992 by Rivers Cuomo, Patrick Wilson, Matt Sharp, and Jason Cropper in Los Angeles, California. The group recorded their first album at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, during which Copper left the band and was replaced by Brian Bell. The album, Weezer, also known as "The Blue Album," was released in May 1994. The band produced two music videos during this time: “Undone - The Sweater Song” and “Buddy Holly”. Both videos became hits on MTV, and the latter won four MTV Video Music Awards and two Billboard Music Video Awards.
Weezer's next album was Pinkerton. Originally envisioned by Cuomo as a space-themed rock opera, this concept was later dropped. The album had three singles, “El Scorcho,” “The Good Life,” and “Pink Triangle.” Two days before the album was released, a temporary injunction was filed against Weezer and their label Geffen by Pinkerton Securities over the name of the album. A judge ruled in favor of Weezer, but because the injunction caused Geffen to hold back some promotion, sales of the album were initially slow. Despite a failure to achieve mainstream success, Pinkerton currently enjoys cult status.
For the next year, the band went on a break to pursue other projects. While living in Boston, Cuomo continued working on new songs for Weezer and recruited musicians from the area to help him. In April 1998, the band, except for Matt Sharp, regrouped to work on the next album. Sharp was replaced by Mikey Welsh, one of the Boston musicians who Cuomo had worked with during the break.
In 2001, the band released Weezer also known as "The Green Album" and went on another tour. During the tour, Weezer tickets were in high demand. In August 2001, Mikey Welsh was checked into a psychiatric hospital after an attempted suicide. Welsh was temporarily, and later permanently, replaced by Scott Shriner. In preparing their fourth album Maladroit, Weezer took the unusual approach of permitting fans to download the demos from their website in return for their feedback. Later, the band cited this experiment as a failure, as the feedback was not cohesive or constructive. However, one song, "Slob," was eventually chosen for the album. Maladroit was released in May 2002 as a harder-edged version of their usual style. While the album received positive reviews, it is currently Weezer's lowest-selling album.
Weezer's fifth album, Make Believe, was released in 2005 and received mixed reviews from critics. However, the album was commercially successful. Finally, after a period where the future of the band was uncertain, Weezer released a third eponymous album, also known as "The Red Album" in 2008. Described as experimental, it includes long and non-traditional songs, writing by the other band members, and new instruments. Since then, Weezer has gone on to release three more albums, Raditude, Hurley, and Everything Will Be Alright in the End.
