According to CMT's biography of Trace Adkins, the artist was born in 1962 in Springhill, Louisiana. An article on Wikipedia about the artist states that "his musical interest came at an early age, when his father taught him to play the guitar." This musical inclination followed Adkins to high school, where he joined a gospel music group. After high school, Adkins attended Louisiana Tech University, where he studied petroleum technology. Upon graduation, Adkins worked on an oil rig before he decided to throw himself into music on a full time basis, playing in local honky-tonks. These honky-tonks would eventually help him get noticed by a record label and provide the material for one of his greatest hits, "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk."
CMT notes that "while singing at Tillie's & Lucy's Pub in Nashville, Trace Adkins was spotted by a Capitol Records executive and was signed to the label." This recognition coupled with successful early singles began earning him fans in country music circles. While country music stars such as Shania Twain were drifting toward more pop-like tunes to "crossover" into the mainstream, Adkins remained true to his honky-tonk roots. He has developed a loyal fan base and he continues to draw new fans with hit songs.
In 1996, Adkins released his debut album Dreamin' Out Loud, which quickly made him one of country music's hottest young stars. The single "(This Ain't) No Thinkin' Thing" became his first #1 hit when it reached the top of Billboard's Hot Country chart. Dreamin' Out Loud was the first of Adkins' albums to go platinum, with Greatest Hits Collection, Vol. 1 (2003), Comin' on Strong (2003), and Songs About Me sharing the distinction. More recently, his true-to-form honky-tonk tune "Honky Tonk Badonkadonk" became a surprise crossover hit, topping both the country and pop charts. The subsequent Honky Tonk Badonkadonk Tour sold out of tickets across the country, drawing fans old and new to the nearest Trace Adkins concert.
