T-Pain

Hip-hop is not only a musical genre, but also an entire cultural movement that originated mainly in Jamaica and was brought to urban New York City in the 1970s. Hip-hop found its way into the mainstream in the early 1990s and is now amongst the most popular music genres worldwide. Hip-hop culture can be identified by its fashion trends and other unique aspects, including breakdancing and beatboxing. The culture has inspired a number of artists, including T-Pain.

One of the most vital elements of hip-hop is rap, a form of achieving rhythm through spoken words that rhyme. Rap originated in West African tradition where wandering poets, called griots, would bring their stories from village to village. Today, there are dozens of famous rap and hip-hop artists. Wycleff Jean, Kanye West, and Jay-Z are among the best-known artists of the 21st century. Other popular rappers include The Roots and Bow Wow. Artist Info

Tallahassee-based MC and vocalist T-Pain (born Faheem Najm) came up in a rap group called Nappy Headz but went pro as a solo R&B artist after he recorded "I'm F**ked Up," a personal take on Akon's Top Ten hit "Locked Up." Akon heard the track and took T-Pain under his wing with a contract on his Jive-distributed Konvict Muzik label. Produced and written mostly by T-Pain, Rappa Ternt Sanga was released in December 2005, led by the Top 20 single "I'm Sprung." Epiphany followed in June 2007. His 2008 album, Thr33 Ringz, was conceptually based around the circus and played up the singer's "Ringleader Man" persona. rEvolver, which followed in 2011, was another conceptual effort, this time putting the focus on how much T-Pain had evolved since his previous effort.
