The Green

Reggae is a form of music that was developed in Jamaica in the 1960s. It was influenced by African and Carribean music, as well as Jamaican ska, rocksteady and American R&B. Beginning as a slowed down version of the faster tempoed ska, reggae has since developed into a number of different styles. Perhaps one of the most recognizable names from the genre is the late Bob Marley, who was one of the its pioneers. Other famous reggae acts include UB40, Peter Tosh, and Steel Pulse, and The Green.

Reggae is not just one type of music, but has diverged into many sub-genres. Reggaeton is a fusion form of reggae and latin music that emerged in 1990 and gained mainstream popularity in the mid-2000s. Other popular forms of reggae include dancehall, dub, rockers, and roots reggae. Over the years, reggae has influenced not only the culture of Jamaica, but has become an integral part of the music tradition across the world. Artist Info

One of the first bands to take the “Jawaiian” sound to the world, Honolulu’s the Green are a reggae four-piece whose self-titled debut album was voted Best Reggae Album of 2010 by the users of iTunes. After cousins Caleb Keolanui and JP Kennedy put their previous band, Next Generation, to rest, they recruited Ikaika Antone and Zion Thompson to form the Green. Their self-titled debut appeared in 2010, and besides its iTunes victory, it would also win Best Reggae Album at Hawaii’s 2011 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. A year later, both the EP Love & Affection and the album Ways & Means would appear on the Easy Star record label. Hawai'i '13 followed in 2013 with production coming from frequent Jack Johnson collaborator Danny Kalb.
