Boyz II Men first formed in the 1980s when five friends were attending an arts high school in Philadelphia. While there, they would take every opportunity to sing and practice, until one day they had their opportunity to sing in front of Michael Bivins of New Edition. Impressed with the skills of the young singers, Bivins agreed to manage them and help them to grow. Unfortunatley, before the group gained international fame, the fifth member, Marc Nelson, dropped out because of personality tensions.
Now a quartet, the remaining members of the band, Michael McCary, Shawn Stockman, Wanya Morris, and Nathan Morris, released their first album in 1991. Entitled Cooleyhighharmony, the album consisted of a unique R&B style that became known as "hip hop doo-wop" music. Through the use of tenor, baritone, and bass voices, the trademark lack of a single lead singer became clear with the release of their first album. This collection came out through Motown Records and featured the song "Motownphilly" where Bivins can be heard rapping. This single, along with another song from Colleyhighharmony called "It's Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" were at the top of the R&B charts. In 1992, Boyz II Men released a new single, "End of the Road." The single hit number one on the charts and stayed there for 13 weeks, skyrocketing them to mainstream fame.
Their sophomore effort, II, was released in 1994 and met great success by selling more than 12 million copies. In the past two decades, they have steadily released albums, including Collide that set to come out in 2014. While the quartet has become a trio as the years went on, the group is still performing and touring throughout the country, including a residence at the Terry Fator Theatre at The Mirage Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. They have sold more than 60 million albums throughout their two decades as a group, and continue to serenade fans with their timeless hits.
