Anat Cohen

Jazz music has been around since the early 1900s, when it developed in New Orleans, Louisiana.New Orleans lends its melting pot appeal and unique flavor to style, which incorporates a variety of instruments including clarinets, drums, saxophones, trombones, and trumpets. One of the most famous American jazz musicians was Louis Armstrong, and some popular contemporary jazz musicians include Kenny G. and Anat Cohen.

Blues got its name from its extensive use of blue notes that are common across both jazz and blues music. Blues emerged in the latter parts of the 19th century in African American communities in the southern United States. At first developing amongst agricultural workers, blues music eventually spread north and contributed to the creation of other genres such as rhythm and blues. Like jazz, blues music incorporates clarinets, drums, saxophones, trombones, trumpets, and other instruments along with vocals. Modern blues artists include Etta James, B.B. King, and Taj Mahal. Artist Info

Israeli-born saxophonist, clarinetist, and flutist Anat Cohen is an adroit jazz musician with a bent toward sophisticated post-bop, Brazilian music, and layered, modern creative improvisation. Born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1975, Cohen grew up in a musical family along with her two brothers, soprano saxophonist Yuval Cohen and trumpeter Avishai Cohen. As a child, she started with clarinet lessons, later adding saxophone while attending the Jaffa Music Centre. After completing her compulsory military service, during which time she played in the Israeli Air Force Big Band, Cohen enrolled at Boston's Berklee College of Music, ultimately graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Music. Upon graduating Berklee in the late '90s she relocated to New York City, where she found work with such luminaries as bandleader Duduka Da Fonseca, singer/percussionist Cyro Baptista, trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, drummer Louis Hayes, guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli, pianist Rachel Z, and many others. She is a longtime member of the all-female big band DIVA, as well as the Brazilian jazz-influenced Choro Ensemble. She also plays and records regularly with her siblings in the jazz group 3 Cohens. As a solo artist, Cohen debuted with 2005's Place and Time, followed by 2007's Noir, 2007's Poetica, and 2008's Notes from the Village. In 2010 she delivered the concert album Clarinetwork: Live at the Village Vanguard. Two years later she returned with Claroscuro. In 2015 Cohen released her seventh album as leader, the eclectic, Brazilian choro-infused Luminosa.
