The New Orleans Jazz Fest was created in 1970 by festival mogul and music producer George Wein, who also created the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 and Newport Folk Festival in 1959. Wein charged Allison Miner and Quint Davis with producing the first festival, and the two brought aboard a number of local jazz performers.
Over time attendance has risen from a mere 350 people at the first festival to a high of 600,000 in 2001. The lineup of the event has also changed over the years, from primarily jazz and other New Orleans and Louisiana-based sounds to an expanded set of genres, including rock, R&B, hip hop, and country. The festival is also known for its selection of Cajun foods, crawfish, and other regional cuisine.
