Adina Howard

R&B and Soul music dates back to the 1940s and 1950s and both have their origins in gospel and blues. Generally, New York City, Chicago, and other urban areas are known to be the birthplaces of soul. R&B, on the other hand, was originally created for the lack of a better description for the genre. Soul music is known for its intense vocals as well as its spiritual and religious roots, while contemporary R&B typically has a more poppy sound with smooth vocals.

Legendary soul artists include Ray Charles, James Brown, and later Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight. Today's R&B scene is shaped by musicians such as Jill Scott, Chris Brown, and Mary J. Blige. Hear the best of soul and R&B by getting Adina Howard tickets from TicketRoom today!

Artist Info

Grand Rapids, Michigan native Adina Howard became a national sensation with the funky R&B of her platinum debut album, 1995's Do You Wanna Ride, and its number two pop hit single, "Freak Like Me" (covered seven years later by Sugababes, who took it to number one in the U.K.). The singer's follow-up, Welcome to Fantasy Island, was shelved just prior to its planned 1997 release by EastWest. Despite a popular collaboration with Jamie Foxx on "T-Shirt and Panties" off the Woo soundtrack, Howard didn't release an official second album until 2003, when the Rufftown label issued The Second Coming. Hampered by distribution and promotion issues, it didn't receive much attention and sold poorly. Howard then switched to the Arsenal label, which released Private Show in 2007. She attended Le Cordon Bleu, earned a degree from the institution, and continued to record into the latter half of the 2010s.
