John Brown's Body

Reggae is a form of music that was developed in Jamaica in the 1960s. It was influenced by African and Carribean music, as well as Jamaican ska, rocksteady and American R&B. Beginning as a slowed down version of the faster tempoed ska, reggae has since developed into a number of different styles. Perhaps one of the most recognizable names from the genre is the late Bob Marley, who was one of the its pioneers. Other famous reggae acts include UB40, Peter Tosh, and Steel Pulse, and John Brown's Body.

Reggae is not just one type of music, but has diverged into many sub-genres. Reggaeton is a fusion form of reggae and latin music that emerged in 1990 and gained mainstream popularity in the mid-2000s. Other popular forms of reggae include dancehall, dub, rockers, and roots reggae. Over the years, reggae has influenced not only the culture of Jamaica, but has become an integral part of the music tradition across the world. Named in honor of the legendary abolitionist, reggae unit John Brown's Body was led by singer/guitarist Kevin Kinsella, a longtime fan of Caribbean music who formed the group Tribulations while attending college in Boston in 1989. Three years later they took top honors in the annual Yamaha Soundcheck contest, touring Japan as a result; in 1993 Tribulations also recorded in Jamaica, releasing the LPs The Gate and Daddy Good Pieces before disbanding. Striving for a more organic roots reggae sound, Kinsella founded John Brown's Body in 1995 with bassist Joshua Neuman, keyboardist Sam Godin, trumpeter Paul Merrill, saxophonist Lee Hamilton, backing vocalist Elliot Martin and drummer Tommy Benedetti; debuting in 1997 with All Time, the outfit signed to Shanachie to issue the follow-up Among Them two years later. This Day followed in early 2000.
