Since the early 1990s, country music fans have been able to count on Country Thunder to bring all of their favorite country artists to one location. 2016 will be no exception, with artists such as Luke Bryan, Eric Church, and Tim McGraw set to take the stage. Country Thunder was founded in 1993 by promoter Larry Barr, and was originally located in Queen Creek, AZ. A much more low-profile festival for the first several years of its existence, Country Thunder received its big break in 1999 by adding stars like Reba McEntire, Faith Hill, and Brooks and Dunn to its line-up. In 2003, the show moved to its current location of Florence, AZ. In 2006 it hosted new American Idol Carrie Underwood, and by 2010 the attendance rose well above 100,000.
The success of the Arizona Country Thunder led to spin-offs. The mid-summer Wisconsin Country Thunder was launched in 1994 in Twin Lakes, and remains as popular as its sister festival. A Texas-based Country Thunder was held in 2007. However, it was canceled in 2008 due to poor ticket sales, and has not run since.
