Tyrese Gibson

R&B and Soul music dates back to the 1940s and 1950s and both have their origins in gospel and blues. Generally, New York City, Chicago, and other urban areas are known to be the birthplaces of soul. R&B, on the other hand, was originally created for the lack of a better description for the genre. Soul music is known for its intense vocals as well as its spiritual and religious roots, while contemporary R&B typically has a more poppy sound with smooth vocals.

Legendary soul artists include Ray Charles, James Brown, and later Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight. Today's R&B scene is shaped by musicians such as Jill Scott, Chris Brown, and Mary J. Blige. Hear the best of soul and R&B by getting Tyrese Gibson tickets from TicketRoom today!

Synopsis

Born in California in 1978, Tyrese Gibson honed his musical skills by competing in talent shows around Los Angeles. He later appeared in a Coke commercial and worked as a model. After appearing in a TV movie, Gibson gained attention with a role in the 2001 film Baby Boy. His breakthrough role came in the 2007 movie Transformers. He also has a recurring role in the "Fast & Furious" franchise.

Early Life

Born on December 30, 1978, in Los Angeles, Tyrese Gibson spent much of his teen years competing in talent shows around Watts. One of three children, Gibson was raised by his mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson, after his father left the family in 1983. When Gibson was 17, he began modeling for Guess and Tommy Hilfiger and eventually landed a recording contract from RCA Records. His self-titled debut album won him a Grammy nomination and sold more than a million copies. He followed up with the albums 2000 Watts and I Wanna Go There before he began pursuing an acting career.

Professional Success

Following a small role in the 2000 television movie Love Song, Gibson was cast as the lead in Baby Boy, John Singleton's 2001 follow-up to Boyz 'N the Hood. He also appeared in 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), playing the role of Roman Pearce and appearing alongside Paul Walker and Eva Mendes. Subsequent big-screen roles included Four Brothers (2005) and Waist Deep (2006). But his big break came in 2007 when he co-starred in the Michael Bay film Transformers. He then appeared in its sequels Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009) and Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011). Further cementing his action-hero status, he landed parts in Death Race (2008) and Legion (2010), and then reprised his role as Roman Pearce in two more Fast and Furious installments: Fast Five (2011) and Fast & Furious 6 (2013).

During his turbo-injected rise to Hollywood stardom, Gibson continued to work on albums. In 2006 he released Alter Ego. In 2011, the album Open Invitation earned him another Grammy nomination.

In the summer of 2013, he teamed up with R&B stars Ginuwine and Tank and released 3 Kings. The group also went on a nationwide tour.

Personal Life

Gibson released the self-help book How to Get Out of Your Own Way in 2012. The following year, he published Manology: Secrets of Your Man's Mind Revealed, which he co-authored with Rev. Run. Both books were New York Times best sellers.

In 2002, Gibson met Norma Mitchell, a college student living in London. The two married in 2007 and had a daughter, Shayla Somer, together. In 2009, the couple had a highly publicized divorce. Gibson currently lives in the Los Angeles area.
