Jeff Foxworthy is one of the most recognized names in comedy today. Nearly everyone knows him by name or as "that 'you might be a redneck' guy." Foxworthy is best known for his "you might be a redneck if…" jokes and his appearances with the Blue Collar Comedy group (comprised of Ron White, Larry the Cable Guy, Bill Engvall, and Jeff Foxworthy). Like many other successful comedians, Jeff Foxworthy branched out into television, film, music, and books in addition to his stage comedy to become a household name. Foxworthy wasn't always a comedic superstar, however. He started his career after college in a very different place: technology.
Born in Georgia, Jeff Foxworthy's parents held very non-redneck occupations. Foxworthy's father James was a computer executive and his mother, Gayle, was an advocate for the homeless. After high school, Jeff Foxworthy went on to study at Georgia Tech University, following in his father's footsteps. After graduation, he went to work for IBM, where he worked for nearly 5 years before quitting to follow a new dream: comedy. According to JeffFoxworthy.org, it was after Jeff Foxworthy won the Southeastern Laugh-Off at the Punch Line Comedy club in 1984 that he was prompted to leave his successful career in computers to strive for what might have seemed impossible: a successful career in comedy. It took some time for Foxworthy to make a name for himself in the tough world of comedy, but after his first live album in 1990 he began to make a noticeable impact. When he released the album You Might Be A Redneck If… in 1993, Jeff Foxworthy burst into the mainstream and the album sat high on the comedy charts for a long while.
Due to the success of his second album, Jeff Foxworthy was given his own sitcom, "The Jeff Foxworthy Show," on ABC. The sitcom never really caught on and was cancelled. His fits and starts in television didn't prevent Jeff Foxworthy from thriving in the live events scene, where Jeff Foxworthy tickets were in high demand. Additionally, many Jeff Foxworthy music and comedy audio releases were still successful hits, as were several books published around that time. In 2004, Foxworthy and a group of like-minded comedians capitalized on their similar comedic topics to create the "Blue Collar Comedy Tour." Touring the country with friends and fellow comedians Ron White, Larry the Cable Guy, and Bill Engvall was a smart decision on the part of Jeff Foxworthy, as it launched him back into the comedy spotlight. The Blue Collar Comedy Tour was a HUGE success and it prompted nationwide tours with sold-out tickets for three years running. Following the unprecedented success of the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, CDs, TV shows, and DVDs followed.
Foxworthy currently has stakes in many ventures including greeting cards, slot machines in casinos, fundraising for Duke Children's Hospital, and Jeff Foxworthy-themed restaurants, and he hosts the popular FOX game show Are you Smarter Than A 5th Grader? In addition to all these ventures and being a family man in Atlanta, Georgia, Jeff Foxworthy still finds time to perform his comedy live on stage!
