Craig Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 25, 1971. Robinson worked as an elementary school music teacher before breaking into comedy. In 2005, he was cast as Darryl Philbin on the American version of The Office. Robinson has appeared on a number of additional shows, and has starred in such comedic films as Hot Tub Time Machine and Pineapple Express.
Craig Phillip Robinson was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 25, 1971. His father was an attorney and his mother was a music teacher. Raised on Chicago's South Side, Robinson shared his mother's love for music as he grew up. He attended Illinois State University and Saint Xavier University, earning the degrees he would need to teach music. After graduating, he began working as an elementary school music teacher.
Craig Robinson performed as a comic while living in Chicago. He also took improv and acting classes at The Second City, the organization that produced such talent as Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. His break came in 2005, when he was cast as Darryl Philbin on the American version of the television show The Office. As a regular cast member on this popular, long-running show, Robinson gained considerable exposure. He also appeared in smaller roles on other programs, including Arrested Development, Reno 911! and Eastbound & Down.
In addition to his TV work, Robinson has appeared in a number of movies. Most of these have been comedies, including Pineapple Express, Hot Tub Time Machine and This is the End. He also voiced the character of Cookie in the animated Shrek movie series.
In his early years as a comedian, Robinson performed with Jerry Minor as the musical duo L. Witherspoon & Chucky. They later performed on Comedy Central, Real Time with Bill Maher and Jimmy Kimmel Live. Robinson is also a member of the band Nasty Delicious. They appeared on the show Last Comic Standing and in an episode of The Office. Additionally, Robinson sings "Jesse's Girl" and "Let's Get It Started" on the Hot Tub Time Machine soundtrack.
Since 2006, Robinson has been arrested multiple times for intoxication and the possession of controlled substances. He was put on probation in 2006 following a drunk-driving incident. In 2008, he was arrested for driving under the influence of cocaine, and for the possession of methamphetamine and MDMA. Robinson pleaded guilty and agreed to take drug-education classes. He was arrested again in 2013 in the Bahamas, and pleaded guilty to charges of possession of marijuana and ecstasy.
