Born in Romeo, Michigan, Robert James "Bob" Ritchie was immersed in music from a young age. He found himself listening to rap music and becoming absorbed in that world. Ritchie was intrigued by the combination of rap and rock in such albums as the Beastie Boys' Licensed to Ill, a style that he would attempt to emulate in his future work. In 1988, after recording his first demos, he signed a contract with Jive Records. However, his first album, Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast, fell flat and failed to bring in the success that he and the record label expected. Consequently, Jive Records did not see much of a future for Kid Rock and eventually he was dropped.
Kid Rock persevered through these failures and continued to do what he loved. He was picked up by an independent label and released the albums The Polyfuze Method in 1993, Fire It Up! in 1994, and Early Morning Stoned Pimp in 1996. His material eventually got him signed by the major label Atlantic Records. With newfound support, Kid Rock released Devil Without a Cause in 1998. His situation looked grim when the album did not have initial commercial success. However, after a chance meeting with MTV VJ Carson Daly, Kid Rock began to make multiple appearances on the network, which boosted his record sales considerably. The album eventually sold more than 11 million copies, and Kid Rock found his ticket to superstardom.
Kid Rock has gone on to release multiple top selling albums. Released in 2000, the compilation album The History of Rock has sold over 2 million copies in the U.S. In 2001, Rock released Cocky, which continued the smash success of his previous studio album. His ninth record, Rock N Roll Jesus, was released in 2007 to a number one charting on the Billboard 200 and a double platinum certification. He has since released three studio albums, Born Free, Rebel Soul, and First Kiss to strong sales. In addition to his albums, Kid Rock is constantly on tour, and Kid Rock concerts often come coupled with guest appearances by some of the other leading acts of the rap, metal, and rock genres including Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blink-182, and Metallica.
