Pieces of a Dream

Jazz music has been around since the early 1900s, when it developed in New Orleans, Louisiana.New Orleans lends its melting pot appeal and unique flavor to style, which incorporates a variety of instruments including clarinets, drums, saxophones, trombones, and trumpets. One of the most famous American jazz musicians was Louis Armstrong, and some popular contemporary jazz musicians include Kenny G. and Pieces of a Dream.

Blues got its name from its extensive use of blue notes that are common across both jazz and blues music. Blues emerged in the latter parts of the 19th century in African American communities in the southern United States. At first developing amongst agricultural workers, blues music eventually spread north and contributed to the creation of other genres such as rhythm and blues. Like jazz, blues music incorporates clarinets, drums, saxophones, trombones, trumpets, and other instruments along with vocals. Modern blues artists include Etta James, B.B. King, and Taj Mahal. Bassist Cedric Napoleon, drummer Curtis Harmon, and keyboardist James Lloyd founded crossover jazz group Pieces of a Dream in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They were teenagers at the time of their 1976 formation. Though jazz-based, the group also emphasized R&B and incorporated funk, quiet storm, hip-hop, new jack swing, and smooth jazz into their recordings, which often featured vocalists (including Barbara Walker, Eva Cassidy, and Maysa Leak). Grover Washington, Jr. produced their first three albums -- Pieces of a Dream, We Are One, and Imagine This -- all of which were released on Elektra from 1981 through 1983. Three additional '80s releases, including a pair co-produced by Lenny White, appeared on EMI-Manhattan. Saxophonist Ron Kerber became a member in the '90s -- an addition that preceded varied releases throughout that decade for Blue Note. In the early 2000s, Pieces of a Dream moved to Cleveland's Heads Up label, where they remained for a decade. Their studio effort, In the Moment, appeared on Shanachie in 2013. In 2015, Pieces of a Dream released their 21st studio album, All In.
