Alternative metal band Godsmack was formed in 1995 by Sully Erna, a Boston area drummer who wanted to form his own band as the lead singer. He enlisted in his friend Lee Richards on guitar, Tommy Stewart on drums, and Robbie Merrill on bass, who together formed the band The Scam. Soon after recording their first demo, they changed their name to Godsmack. The band got their start by performing in bars around the city of Boston. By 1996, Richards and Stewart had left the band and were replaced with Tony Rombola on guitar and Joe D’Arco on drums. In 1997, Godsmack recorded their first album, All Wound Up, which was released independently by EK Records.
After the album was released, the band continued to perform in bars until the album eventually fell into the hands of radio DJ, Rocko, who began playing the track “Keep Away” on the Boston radio station WAAF. The song quickly rose in popularity and the band soon began receiving the recognition they were looking for.
Godsmack finally got their big break in 1998 when they signed with Universal/Republic Records. After signing with the record label, the band remasted All Wound Up, which included adding new tracks. They rereleased the album as Godsmack, which peaked at number 22 on The Billboard 200. In 2001, the album was certified 4x platinum by the RIAA.
As of 2015, Godsmack has released a total of six albums: Godsmack (1998), Awake (2000), Faceless (2003), IV (2006), The Oracle (2010), and most recently, 1000hp in 2015. Over the course of the 2000s they were nominated for four Grammy Awards. Although they never won a Grammy, in 2001 they won the Billboard Award for Rock Artist of the Year. This year, Godsmack will be on tour in support of 1000hp.
