Bill Engvall has been cracking up the comedy scene since the early 1990s, and he continues to find a great deal of success almost 20 years later. Remaining relevant in comedy can be a difficult task, but Bill Engvall has proved to be up to the challenge. Engvall has played it smart by diversifying; he has CDs, DVDs, films, and a TV show in addition to doing live comedy tours. The exposure he gets in other media ensures that sales for Bill Engvall tickets when he goes on tour are always strong.

Bill Engvall had a career in entertainment before he ever hit the comedy clubs. Prior to pursuing comedy, Galveston, Texas-born Bill Engvall was a nightclub DJ in Dallas. According to his biography on BillEngvall.com, Engvall was planning to become a teacher when a spur-of-the-moment decision to try his hand at a comedy club amateur night led him into comedy. He continued to dabble in amateur comedy nights in Texas comedy clubs before he decided to pursue comedy full-time. According to CMT.com, Bill Engvall hit Los Angeles around 1990, where he hosted a cable special called Pair of Jokers "and also appeared on Evening at the Improv and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno."

Bill Engvall got into television early in his career, and the nationwide exposure served to bring his style of comedy to much larger audiences than he would have reached in the comedy club scene. Between 1992 and 1996, Engvall continued to use television as a vector to reach audiences with his comedic talent. During those years, he appeared on Designing Women, Delta, and The Jeff Foxworthy Show before releasing his first country-style music album Here's Your Sign. Engvall went on to tour with Jeff Foxworthy and released two more albums in the '90s. In 2000, Bill Engvall released another album called Now That's Awesome and went on his first round of performances with the Blue Collar Comedy Tour with Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White. The Blue Collar Comedy Tour eventually spun off into a movie, which premiered on Comedy Central and at that time was the most watched movie in the channel's history. Millions of copies of the DVD were sold during the release, and the sequels The Blue Collar Comedy Tour Rides Again and Blue Collar Comedy Tour - One For The Road in Washington DC were equally popular. Bill Engvall also had two solo specials air on Comedy Central around the same time as the Blue Collar movies, which were also highly rated. Engvall is also an author, having published his autobiography, titled Bill Engvall - Just A Guy, in 2007.

In addition to writing books, recording albums, making movies, and performing in television comedy specials, Bill Engvall is the star and executive producer of his successful sitcom on TBS, "The Bill Engvall Show." Engvall's sitcom has been renewed for three seasons and is still going strong. Somehow, with all of that going on, Bill Engvall is still finding time to tour the country with his stage comedy.

Artist Info

Born in Galveston, Texas, Bill Engvall was a nightclub DJ in Dallas until the call to comedy became too strong to deny. After startling amateur-night audiences at several local clubs and a brief stint in St. Louis, Engvall arrived in Los Angeles in 1990. He hosted the Pair of Jokers cable special with Rosie O'Donnell and also appeared on Evening at the Improv and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. In 1992, he was awarded Best Male Standup at the American Comedy Awards, and moved into sitcom TV with an appearance on Designing Women and a regular role on the short-lived Delta. Signed to Warner Bros. in 1996, Engvall released his countrified debut album, Here's Your Sign -- also the title of his most famed bit -- in 1996. A tour with like-minded everyman comic Jeff Foxworthy was next; that in turn led to a part on Foxworthy's sitcom that was as brief as the show itself. The Dorkfish LP followed in 1998, and Engvall saw both it and his debut achieve gold record status. His seasonal effort, Here's Your Christmas Album, appeared that same year.
In mid-2000, Engvall released Now That's Awesome and embarked on the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, again with Foxworthy, and also with two other comics they'd recruited, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White. The quartet's act proved to be very popular, and the tour continued over the next several years, spawning several albums, a movie, and a cable television show along the way. Despite Blue Collar's collective success, Engvall continued releasing material on his own as well. Cheap Drunk: An Autobiography appeared in 2002, followed a year later by album number six, Here's Your Sign Reloaded. A roundup of some of Engvall's best material was released in the fall of 2004, entitled A Decade of Laughs, before his next all-new album, 15° Off Cool, surfaced in February 2007. Aged and Confused followed in 2009. The Blue Collar Comedy Tour wound down after the departure of Ron White, but in 2012 Engvall joined Foxworthy and Larry for the tour and album Them Idiots Whirled Tour. In 2013 the comedian became a contestant on the 17th season of Dancing with the Stars, while 2014 saw the release of the career retrospective Ultimate Laughs.
