Carrie Underwood grew up in the town of Checotah, Oklahoma, where she discovered her love and talent of singing at a very young age. Beginning at the age of three years old and continuing throughout her childhood, Underwood would perform at her local church and eventually at festivals in different states. To go along with her powerful voice, she also learned to play the piano and guitar. By the time she reached college, Underwood had all but given up on achieving success as singer. But that changed following her win on American Idol in 2005. During her audition, judge Simon Cowell predicted she would not only win, but also outsell all other Idol contestants. She has since done both.
Underwood released her debut album in 2005 entitled Some Hearts. It was the top selling female country album in 2005, 2006 and 2007, and has been certified six times platinum. The lead single off of Some Hearts was "Jesus, Take the Wheel." It was a major success, spending six weeks at number one on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. The song also landed Underwood many awards in 2007, highlighted by three Grammy Award nominations, and two wins for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song. In 2008, another single, "Before He Cheats," won Grammys for Best Country Song and Best Female Country Performance.
In 2007, Underwood released Carnival Ride, which was a runaway success. It not only took a spot as the number one Country Album in the U.S., but also topped the Billboard 200 chart. Underwood's star continued to shine brightly in 2009 as she released her third album, Play On. Underwood once again took the number one spot and the album's first single, "Cowboy Casanova," was her fastest selling to that time. Underwood has toured with her fellow American Idols and also with other country stars such as Keith Urban. in May 2012, she released her fourth album, Blown Away. In 2016, Underwood is touring throughout the country in support of her fifth album, Storyteller.
