Originally members of a band called Sweet Children, Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt formed Green Day when they were 17 years old in East Bay, California. The punk rock group played gigs at 924 Gilman Street and made their debut in 1990 with 39/Smooth, an alternative album. Embraced by bands such as No Doubt, Coldplay, and Phish, alternative music features fast songs and subversive lyrics and Green Day, who supposedly named their band after marijuana, fit right in. Originally, John Kiffmeyer played the drums under the name Al Sobrante, but he left to attend college and Frank Edwin Wright III, known as Tré Cool, replaced him in time for their next album, Kerplunk!
After initial success in the independent punk industry, the band had the chance to join a major label, Reprise Records, and play Green Day concerts all over the world. Signing a contract with Reprise, they released Dookie in 1994, and alternative music fans loved "Basket Case" and "When I Come Around". Concert tickets sold quickly as the punk rockers appeared at Woodstock and Lollapalooza, and MTV played their music videos often. As old school bands like The Who and the Sex Pistols retired, Green Day revived punk rock and led to new alternative groups such as Fall Out Boy, Blink-182, Kings of Leon, and My Chemical Romance.
Along with Nirvana and Pearl Jam, Green Day inspired thousands of punk music fans. Although the group faced a slow period while recording albums like Insomniac and Nimrod, they made a huge comeback with American Idiot in 2004. Winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Album, the rock opera explored three characters called Jesus of Suburbia, St. Jimmy, and Whatsername. With songs like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends," American Idiot lyrics focus on politics, pop culture, and social issues, and the album sparked a run of Green Day tour dates with concerts in Europe, Australia, and Japan.
In addition to inventing Jesus of Suburbia, Armstrong has played in Pinhead Gunpowder and other bands. Using aliases like Captain Underpants, he formed a new wave crew called The Network in 2003. After releasing Money Money 2020, The Network began working on a new song, "Omega 3000." In 2007, the group created a secret rock and roll band called Foxoboro Hot Tubs with the Reverend Strychnine Twitch, and the Hot Tubs released Stop Drop and Roll!!! Despite their side projects, Mike Dirnt and the band kept performing as Green Day, and they released a new rock opera called 21st Century Breakdown in May of 2009.
